IN ORDER TO GET THE RAINBOW YOU MUST ENDURE THE RAIN

The messages found in fortune cookies range from predictions of the future (You will have a pleasant surprise), to insights into your personality (You believe in the goodness of mankind), bite-size chunks of fortune cookie philosophy (Do not be covered in sadness or be fooled in happiness they both must exist) to the pragmatic acknowledgement of the context (Enjoyed the meal? Buy one to go too). The meaning is fluid, yet seemingly particular: the prediction must be applicable to any given person, but at the same time sound personalized, as though referring to a specific situation.

In pop culture, fortune cookies are often portrayed as carrying secret messages; there is a variety of urban legends about a fortune cookie containing unique knowledge that can change the course of events. Yet the divination and fortune-telling practices proclaim that they merely provide interpretative methods of gaining insight into the knowledge already available. The work series aims to ‘activate’ a fortune by means of language, sculpture and coincidence.
