ADVENTURE, FANTASY, MYSTERY, ACTION

The project examines utopian and dystopian representations in pop culture as an indicator of a society's ability to imagine its own future. A strong revival of both classical and contemporary dystopian fiction can be seen as a symptom of the urgency and powerlessness facing society. Based on video games as a genre associated with post-apocalyptic scenarios, the exhibition explores the aesthetics of Survivalism and the romanticization of the loner fighting against a hostile outside world.

Opening: 3.10.2017

Pseudo-Latin, everyday found object, readymade, malapropism. Like a spell that targets art production, like magic that haunts its gestures, the gestures of the manipulation of forms, the gestures of the manipulation of material. In both the virtual and truest sense of the word: handling. The handling becomes the artifice. Enchanting, always ambiguous. Otis Rem is like an abracadabra: universal, deployable in all times and spaces. Depending on the context, however, its usage leads to different results. A, B, C, D, the individual parts of the dynamic system in a temporary standstill. Fragmentary and modular, adaptive. A-Bra-Ca-Dabra. With intention, on purpose—yet unpredictable.

PERIPHRASIS (FOR A DITTO, DITTO DEVICE)

Periphrasis (for a ditto, ditto device) is an experimentally designed scenario in the draft stage, a think-tank and rehearsal for a future exhibition—but is also an exhibition in itself. Starting from the idea of the copy as a nowadays omnipresent yet more and more invisible artistic practice and form, seven Austrian and international participants discuss different strategies of appropriation.

In Juxtapositions fifteen publications seek the vicinity of like works at Salon für Kunstbuch, 21er Haus, Vienna. The idea for the exhibition draws from a linguistic model that describes the construction of words through sequences of linguistic components. Similar to certain terms that only emerge in the juxtaposition [lat. iuxta >next to<, ponere >to put<] of words or individual word elements, the exhibited artists’ books are not merely stand-alone manifestations but should be seen within the specific context they have been placed in. Ultimately, the content, formal, and material preconditions of the printed matter surrounding the exhibits at Salon für Kunstbuch—"a life-size model of a bookshop"—equally contribute to the meaning of the publications as they, in turn, serve as independent artistic forms of expression.

Juxtapositions is an exhibition project in the framework of the seminar CMD+P—Post-digital Publishing at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (TransArts—Transdisciplinary Art, 2015/2016).
